I examined this more closely and discovered that it didn't happen at or below surface level. It was cut off 1/4 inch above surface level. Could those gnats do that?

I worked on the plants this morning. I checked and only watered the plants needing it. I pollinated some pepper blossoms. I started thinning some of my beans. OMG, you should see how big they are and how much they have grown just over night.

I hate how everyone keeps calling soy beans edamame. Yeah, I've had to remind myself now and then that they're soy beans in the pod and not a kind of broad bean.
