I am back to having to hunt for a red flashlight to get for star gazing so I thought I would start this thread to put down some of my thoughts. Not all red flash lights are the same. Looks like the newer astronomy lights have both red and white LEDs and you can switch between them. To me this doesn't seem like a good idea. It heightens the chance that the white light will be turned on when it shouldn't. Is it worth the gamble of loosing your night vision for a half hour or so? Maybe you should have both a red and white flashlight but they should be separate flashlights. There are some red LED flash lights that look and boast about being intense. That may not be needed. Some that I see you can adjust the intensity. I like that. I see in some reviews that people are reporting that the color isn't red but more like orange. I don't know does that damage night vision.

After watching a few videos about red LED flash lights and thinking about them. It makes a lot of sense to have them around your house as an emergency flash light as well.

This light has a diffuser over the LED. I like that. The negative review that I seen about this light says about it being turned on and off by twisting the top and if twisted to far the top pops off and it could all fall apart.

This was the flash light that I ordered that didn't get sent. The thing about it that I didn't care for so much was it uses a 9 volt battery. Sometime they are not as easy to find as they use to be. I'm wondering if they are still making this one any more? when you find it the price is high.

This is one of them that has both red and white LEDs. Celestron offers one very similar it might even be the same one.

I also keep thinking that the squared off flashlights (with the flat sides) might be better then the round ones. They wont roll. If you are trying to do astronomical drawings maybe you can secure it to a clipboard with a rubber band. Don't they make any of those clip on book reading lights with red LEDs? There are headlamps that have red LEDs but I know on some of them you have to cycle through the white light before getting to the red and that wont help you with making friends.

I do have some red plastic wrap. Would that work if I put it over say a pen light?

Maybe, but if it doesn't, going over it with a red marker would probably do the job.

VOILA! I just made me a red flash light for star gazing and it didn't cost me anything One single ply of the red plastic wrap didn't really do anything. I kept folding and checking it in the dark until I got to what seemed like a good red light to me. I think it is folded to where there are 8 plies of red plastic wrap over the front. I also put a string on it to carry it around my neck.

I did get the Twilight app that automatically dims the phone screen in the evening downloaded. It works fairly well.
