I think that I heard when I was a Kid that the Empire State Building gets covered with these.

These are very alien looking. The bug I haven't seen since I was a kid is what we use to call a banana spider.

It said the mantis sat there for 24 hours waiting to catch a hummingbird.

These videos are amazing. I really like the picture you took of the one on your screen door. It might make a good avatar, too.
I hadn't heard about the Empire State building being covered in these insects before, though.

How does it kill the hummingbird? I remember hearing that the mantis shrimp has the strongest punch on the planet. Does it strike like the shrimp does?

Sorry, there isn't one on my door, though I've seen the odd moth or two at times.

Apparently it uses a kind of grab and stab technique. Found a video clip of neat program by the BBC which shows various mantises catching crickets in slow motion.

I was just doing some calculating from what we are just finding out and a mantis would not have to be very big at all to start praying on humans. The size that dragonflies use to be would probably do it.
