Yesterday I was researching alcohol stoves and I found this site zenstoves.netand I decided to try my hand at making my own ;D I do have a pop can alcohol stove that I sent away for several years ago. I did try it out after I bought it and thought that it was really neat but I didn't get to hike with it yet. When things change & if I keep on living I am probably going to get back into hiking (probably from necessity). I think that I have all of the material gathered that I need. I bought a 6 pack of V8 today. The wood alcohol from the hardware stores still creeps me out a little. I read that the grain alcohol Everclear from the liquor store works. I would rather use something like it but something tells me that it probably costs a lot.

Why does the wood alcohol freak you out?

Because of it being poison. I can just see some dumb ass finding that in my pack and thinking ah booze then taking a swig or mixing me a drink or using it for cooking with out me knowing. I just finished making my first part of the stove. It's the main part, the body I guess. The stove only has 2 parts. The only thing that went wrong so far is a wrong measurement. It should be 1 1/2 inches high but I made it 1 3/8 inches high. I'm hoping it doesn't matter much. I have to drink another can of V8 empty tomorrow before I can make the other part.

I love V8, I'll do all the drinking!
I did not know it was poison, I can see your point there. Hopefully you can provideus with a picture of the stove once it is finished.

Here it is Tom ;D Behind on the left is a 5.5 oz. V8 can and on the right is a squat 8 oz. soda can. It is a chimney/mini low pressure sideburner.

I just finished making my 2nd alcohol stove ;D It is a totally different design then the first one that I did. This one is called the YACC Stove. I don't know exactly how to classify it. It is really some thing, all of the different types of alcohol stoves and then even more so all of the different designs for each one of the types. I will not know if this one works until I actually try it

I have gathered started working on another stove. This on will be similar to the first one that I made but with a greater fuel capacity and a few more vent / jet holes.
I am on the look out for a good pot stand design that I can make.
When I get to use them in the future I imagine that I will mostly be using narrow pots and a pot stand works best with them.

So why are you making so many of these Snap? And what are they usually used for? Survival I expect...

More so camping & hiking then survival. They are easy and fun to make and fun to use. There are soooo many different ones that you can make and test to see which fits your needs the best.

I ate a 3 oz can of SPAM Spread tonight (for the can). I never had it before. It was very salty but other then that it was good. The can is lined with some kind of plastic but I can see where little bits of it are gone. Must be from the knife that I used to spread it with. I might be able to scrub it off easy with steel wool or something. There is the simplest basic stove that I am going to try an make out of it but I need the plastic gone.

Let us know how well it works. Are these wickless?

Let us know how well it works. Are these wickless? Yes all of my alcohol stoves so far are wickless. There are some stove designs that use a wick made of nonflammable fiberglass insulation, perlite (volcanic rock used in insulation and horticulture) or something comparable to help vaporize fuel and prevent spilling. I just finished making my 3rd stove last night. I like my first one but it has 8 side holes instead of 6 and the body is made from the top of the can instead of the bottom for greater fuel capacity. My next stove will be one made with the SPAM Spread can that I emptied. I am still looking for or trying to come up with a good pot stand
