Japan earthquake not connected to supermoon, says NASALink to articleNASA has rubbished claims the earthquake that devastated Japan was caused by the supermoon. An 8.9 magnitude tremor struck Honshu island on Friday, resulting in a tsunami that caused widespread devastation in coastal areas and, police fear, more than 1,000 deaths. Pictures: Japan hit by earthquake and tsunami The phrase is used to describe the time when the moon is at the closest point of its orbit to Earth and is also full - something that will happen on March 19th. Astrologers and new age forecasters have claimed a supermoon results in increased levels of seismic activity and unusual weather patterns characterised by storms. But NASA's Dave Williams insisted the earthquake in Japan could not possibly have been connected to it. The astronomer told ABC News that at the time of the tremor, the moon was actually closer to the furthest point from Earth of its orbit than to the position it will be in on March 19th. 'It was basically a normal day on Earth as far as the lunar gravity and tidal forces were concerned,' said Mr Williams. 'Unless the Earth somehow knew the supermoon was coming, I can't imagine any scientific connection between the two events.' Speaking before the earthquake in Japan, John Bellini, a geophysicist for the US Geological Survey, said there was no proven link between a supermoon and natural disasters. He told Life's Little Mysteries: 'A lot of studies have been done on this kind of thing by USGS scientists and others. They haven't found anything significant at all.'

Yeah, I'm sure that my fellow employees will have some interesting encounters with patrons for at least the next three days. Am glad at times that my job doesn't require me to work the front desk.
