Hmm, according to this article, it's made with white rice. The author buys a commercially made genmaicha and tried an experiment in order to make something like it. If the Wikihow method doesn't turn out, we might try something like his precooked and low-heat baked method. How to Make Your Own Roasted Rice for Genmaicha

The last time that I cook rice some stuck and kind of burnt/browned on the bottom of the pan and I tried it and thought it was great. Yeah, I like the toasty bits, too.

How to Make Your Own Roasted Rice for Genmaicha Here's a recipe that is worked out a bit better and might work as a recipe for the rice tea if the oil, yogurt, buttermilk and lemon juice / vinegar ingredients are omitted. Hmm, think I'd omit some of them for the cereal, too.

I put 2 teaspoons full in a mug and steeped for over 5 minutes. It didn't seem to color the water. It only has a very slight smell and taste. Cooking it then browning it might be the way to go.

I was wondering if we'd have to precook it.

Well, my idea didn't work. Looks like one needs to use white rice. I might try this again the next time I cook some.

I would still like this to work out. The older I get the less inclined I am to pursue things.

I'm kind of the same way, but also know that it's good to do new things.
