Yes, that is quite a mystery. Although they say that there's not evidence of wind or water erosion, I keep looking at the base and thinking that's an interesting pattern on it. In fact the whole area is interesting and almost looks like it's left over from some very high sea levels, most likely from much earlier in our planet's history.
