Do You Know about LADA?

LADA stands for a type of diabetes known as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults. Most people know that type 1 diabetes often starts in childhood, and that type 2 diabetes is commonly diagnosed in overweight adults. Over 90 percent of people with diabetes have type 2, so when an adult presents with symptoms of high blood glucose or has a high A1c laboratory test, many doctors think “type 2.”
Not your typical case of diabetes
However, a person who has LADA may not be overweight, may have normal blood pressure and lipid levels, may have no relatives with diabetes, and may still have high blood glucose levels even though taking oral medications for diabetes.
LADA is an autoimmune condition in which antibodies attack the beta cells in the pancreas—the cells that make insulin—and slowly destroy them.
