Intel Corp. (INTC) the world’s largest supplier of semiconductors used in personal computers, disclosed last week a bug in its chips that let hackers remotely gain control of Windows PCs without the need for a password.

According to this article, just turning off the computer won't protect it. They should have the patches rolling out starting this week, though.
This article has a way of telling if you have an affected computer.
It looks like disconnecting from the Internet when one is not using it is a good idea until then.
