I just saw the new Star Trek movie, and it is quite a movie on many levels especially if you are a fan of the franchise, as it is really a do over, still connected to the original version of the Star Trek universe, and by the end, it demands that many adventures we have seen in any Star Trek series or film occurring after the start of the original series of the sixties must be altered...
But if we peel away the restart value of this movie, and examine the movie itself, we find that most of the movie is serviceable and does what it is supposed to do, both in terms of entertainment and introducing the casual audience to the Star Trek universe. Seeing the meetings of Spock, Kirk, Bones and the rest is a joy and although you have to keep reminding yourself that no one will be able to exactly portray the main characters as we are familar with them, the actors do a good job of trying, while also being believable in their respective parts.
Trouble is, besides the altering of Star Trek lore and the well played out origins of both the crew and the new restart of the franchise, it becomes a rather standard action movie with rather cliche and standard motivations and plot devices, and they come in droves as peoples home worlds and father's are destroyed to give our heroes depth and emotion, and resolutions are brought about by way of nothing more cleaver then phasers and proton Torpedoes.
That is not to say that the movie is not good or worth seeing, rather that it doubly makes void almost all of Star Trek's history and seems shallow and empty, feeling more like a pilot episode then a full movie. I fully expect it is a pilot of sorts, as I presume there will be more voyages of the star ship Enterprise, and perhaps then I will feel more at ease with the remake, and perhaps the crew themselves will be given a task that is not filled with such a see through plot and ending, the better to make use of the fine action sequences and SFX.
