Certainly Inspector Morse has been a boon for ITV since it first adapted the British detective from the printed word to the television in 1987. That first series ran till 2000 and produced thirty-three Morse adventures, even more adventures then the original run of novels by Colin Dexter.
The series also gave birth to a spin off entitled Lewis, based on Inspector Morse’s sidekick in the original series, Robert Lewis, which has produced over twenty-five episodes of it’s own.
However, it would appear that the next series to make use of Colin Dexter’s creations, the upcoming Endeavor, might appeal more to the darker tones of the novels then the classic ‘gentleman detective’ we might be used to seeing in productions tied to the Morse franchise.
