What was the first book you read? I started reading so long ago, I've forgotten which book it was.

I read my first book when I was in the navy on the USS Forrestal CV-59. It was my first cruse and I was Temporary Assigned Duty to the mess deck. I made up my mind that I was going to read a book cover to cover. I went to the ship's store. They had a rack of novels but they were just about all westerns so even though it wasn't my thing even back then I ended up getting one. The first book that I got and forced myself to read the whole thing was Six Guns South by Robert MacLeod.

I'm not one for westerns, either. I had a preference for fantasy and science fiction starting in high school. Until then, it was the usual kid's books.

Back in junior high I checked out the book Silent Running from the school library but I didn't finish reading it.

I just read pages 204 & 205 and they said that some physicist suggested on the internet that one or two NIDS members were killed and gutted on the ranch and then said that it wasn't true and no serious physical harm came to anyone. I remember seeing a video years ago of Bigelow saying that a man has died.

I'm not done reading this book yet. I just started reading chapter 27. So far the most meaningful account of an incident relayed by this book that occurred on the ranch was the one that I read on pages 214 & 215. It tells of when Tom Gorman was able to seize an opportunity to put to the test whatever it was that was observing him and trip it up. It was extremely reminiscent of the movie Predator staring Arnold Schwarzenegger and the alarm clock incident that I had with my home invader. I was kind of surprised with the way that this book overly glorifies people who have PHDs that it didn't mention that hay can and does generate heat so much so that there have been reports of it spontaneously combusting. So Tom hiding in or behind a large enough hay bale may have masked him possibly from infrared view like in the movie Predator. It does mention Tom's feeling about the implication of what happened as being that his watcher wasn't omnipotent. I know first hand how that is. They can be tripped up and do make mistakes.

I was surprised to find that Louis L'Amour is mentioned. That is because of his last book The haunted Mesa which is very different from his other books.

I've heard of truckloads of hay or alfalfa that have caught fire because the bales are too 'green.' I think this means that the hay or alfalfa wasn't left in the field long enough before baling. Hey, take a look at this.
