The term "inexpensive" has a different definition for everyone, but good, inexpensive german-equatorial starter mounts for astrophotography are difficult to find for less than about $750 - $1,000. This may seem very expensive considering that you can get completely computerized telescope, like a Meade 80mm Autostar Go To computerized refractor for $300. Unfortunately, you really won't be able to take pictures of anything except the moon with it.
The problem with most of these inexpensive computerized mountings is that they are not really designed for the rigors of astrophotography, and they are almost universally of altazimuth design. There is nothing inherently wrong with an altazimuth mounting, it can track the stars very well for visual use. The problem is that because it is not an equatorial mounting that allows the polar axis to be aligned with the Earth's axis of rotation, long exposure photographs will suffer from field rotation
Oh, Don, from what I'm reading in the Nightwatch astronomy book, you really want to avoid the low-cost (under $ 200), beginner's telescopes. They come with lots of stuff, but are just crap. The book has a lot of good, basic information on both binos and telescopes, too.
Also, according to them, a good pair of 7x50 binos is a good selection for general stargazing.
I am thinking about sending for a Meade 80 mm Polaris. This is an experiment and a gamble that might get me killed. Right now the later is OK. If it works out hopefully in the future I could get a better telescope.

sherlew99: What a fascinating concept. Well the air above would occupy an area of space. Plus the basic word "space" is just a common term that fails to include the vast, wonderful weirdness out there between all objects out beyond our world.
